John came across my website in Jan 2010. He was at Kasfareet from 1953 - 56 in the V & A Stores. His biggest memory was guard duties every 3 days with corned beef and tomato sarnies.
Hi Alwyn, re the pics of Moascar, for some reason I was originally sent to the Royal Engineers at CRE North. I was in charge of the clothing store. It was a right skive as the Army did not really know what to do with me and was out of touch with the RAF. No guard duties, no parades, I was assisted by an A.C. Jenkins. We used to provide the odd Army Officer with free brown boots in exchange for a bottle of Scotch. I occasionally did escort duty taking laundry to Kassasin. Other than that, Jenks and me were left to our own devices. We spent a lot of time sailing on a yacht belonging to the Quartermaster Warrant Officer...I was brought back to earth when posted to Kasfareet and perimeter guard duties every three days. X Group was the equipment section, V & A was the valuable and attractive items i.e. aircrew wristwatches, small arms etc that we despatched for distribution and repairs to various depots. This store was run by myself and a Flight Sargeant. We had an East African soldier plus an Egyptian labourer to cart the heavy stuff. I cannot recall any surnames from Billet 19 unfortunately.
Just let you know of an incident which I find funny now. Coupla months after demob, I came home to my parents house and found a couple of guys waiting to talk to me. Turned out they were S.I.B. RAFP. It seems that while I was in Egypt an aircrew watch had gone astray. They grilled me for two hours. I had visions of the glasshouse looming. It was`nt me anyway but at the time it was a bad experience. Only watch I had was a cheap Timex.
cheers, John
