Football International - Egypt v Russia in Cairo 1955
December 4th 1955 and we are on our way to see International Football at the Cairo Stadium. Just pausing en route for a beer or two. Above, Bill Curtis and Tony Maskill supping Stella, Smudger Smith filming with his film camera he bought in Port Fouad when we had a few days leave there. In the background I can see ? Turner, Jerry Hancock, ? Rhodes, and young Norris. The shot below also takes in Ken Millington on the left.

The programme and team lists. The names that stood out at the time was goalkeeper Lev Yashin ( the Cat ), left half Neto and right winger Tapouchine. I remembered those names from listening to football commentaries on the radio before my service days I recall.
The teams take to the field. Note the barbed wire above the fence and all the police who encircled the stadium carried firearms !!! We had seats and if your view was obstructed you just moved your chair.
This was 1955 before England won the title of World Football Hooligans. You should have seen this crowd !! There were thousands packed into the ground and they were all standing. The president of the Egyptian Football Association had died recently and they marked the occasion by starting the match and playing for a minute or two, then the referee blew his whistle and the game stopped and all the players stood where they stopped for a minutes silence. Then the referee blew his whistle again and they all chased after the ball. It was only a friendly but the crowd kicked up a hell of a din and fires kept breaking out among the crowds on the terracing. Scary. A day to remember but I do not recall the score.
