Mousehole, Cornwall June 21st 2011
As soon as my daughter Sam and her husband invited myself and Sheila to accompany them for a weeks holiday in Liskeard, Cornwall, I decided that I must grab the opportunity of meeting up with Jack Guard who lives in Mousehole 66 miles further on. I only called Jack two days before leaving on the holiday then I called again when we got there and arranged to meet up on the following Tuesday. The day before had turned out rather wet in Looe but West Cornwall welcomed us with bright sunshine as we pulled into the harbour car park to be greeted by Jack and his mate Roy, who looks after the car park and had obligingly kept a space available for us. It was great to finally meet up with Jack after many messages between us by e-mail on the internet and Jack and I rapidly retired to a nearby cafe for a good old natter over coffee and tea cakes. My party took themselves off for a look around the lovely fishing village and Jack also took me for a short tour eventually ending up in his homely cottage which he shares with his two cats. His biggest interest these days is his extensive collection of home made videos covering the local scene of Mousehole, Newlyn and Penzance and the many events and festivals celebrated in the area. Many of these are displayed on You Tube. All good things come to end however and it was soon time to say farewell to our oldest known ex - Kasfareet man who could not resist taking a final picture of us leaving the car park. Thanks for a lovely time Jack.
Jack and someone else. I thought he was a friend but Jack does not know him from Adam. Jack has many anecdotes including one that one of his forebears was among the first party of Whites to land in New Zealand. It was rather unfortunate that two of the party ended up on the local Maori Dish of the Day Menu !!

Jack`s lovely end terrace cottage. Built in the 1800`s by his grandfather as one in a row of three and named Jamaica Terrace because he had just returned from there. There is a magnificent view of the bay with St Michaels Mount Island opposite.

The two pictures above are of the oldest building in Mousehole.
The plaque below reads :-
Squire Jenkyn Keigwin was killed here 23rd July 1595 defending his house against the Spaniards. Mousehole was burned but the house was spared. It is now the oldest in the village built circa 14th cent.

We overtook this long distance fund raising trek just outside of Penzance. We had just passed under a bridge sprouting TV cameras and we viewed the item that evening on the local TV news.
The notice on the back was to text horse to a number in order to donate £5 to Help the Heroes Fund. The safety convoy included front and rear car escorts with flashing hazard lights. |
